FOOD INFLATION BRIEF

This Brief provides an overview of food inflation
dynamics, its associated causes, and the cost of basic healthy eating
for July 2023.

Taking a look at food inflation. 

South African year-on-year inflation on food and non-alcoholic beverages decreased by 1.1 percentage points from 11.0% in June 2023 to 9.9% in July 2023.
In July 2023, a reference household had to spend R3 552 on the Thrifty Healthy Food Basket, R345 per month more for a basic healthy food basket than a year ago.
