Oxtail prices double: AMIE asks Agriculture Department for science behind Argentine import restrictions

Johannesburg, 26 August 2026, The Association of Meat Importers and Exporters

Oxtail that retailed at approximately R79–R99/kg earlier this year is now selling for around R169–R199/kg as restrictions on Argentine imports continue to constrain supply.

South Africa cannot produce enough oxtail to meet domestic demand, and approximately 70% of imported oxtail comes from Argentina.

AMIE has formally asked the Department of Agriculture to provide the scientific evidence and risk assessments behind the revised import requirements and to urgently reconsider their impact.
