22 July 2025, Department of Agriculture
Country held hostage by a broken system – that is how Minister for Agriculture, John Steenhuisen positioned the current limitation and challenges with disease control in South Africa. He was speaking at the FMD Indaba, hosted by The Department of Agriculture and the Agricultural Research Council in Pretoria on the 21 – 22 of July 2o25. Steenhuisen emphasised that the indaba is “a crucial gathering at a time when South Africa’s livestock industry is under immense pressure, not just from the biological spread of disease, but from the consequences of policy failure, institutional fatigue and an outdated response model that no longer meets the scale or complexity of what we face.”
